Fort Wayne was named for American Revolutionary War Statesman Anthony Wayne. Located in northeast Indiana, Fort Wayne is the second largest city in the state. The city is a major center for defense industries, with companies such as BAE Systems, Exelis, Raytheon Systems, and the Fort Wayne Air National Guard Station employing many Fort Wayne residents. Fort Wayne has been an All-America City Award recipient three times.
Numerous inventions have come out of Fort Wayne, including gasoline pumps in 1885, the refrigerator in 1913, and the video game console in 1972. The city has no professional sports teams currently, however the first professional baseball game was played in Fort Wayne in 1871 against a team from Cleveland. The Embassy Theater, originally an old movie palace, has been the home to the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra since its founding in 1944.
Fort Wayne is sometimes referred to as the "city of churches" due to its high volume of religious institutions. Currently, there are 360 in the city and several major church institutions are headquartered in Fort Wayne, including the American Association of Lutheran Churches, the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship Association, the Missionary Church, and the Fellowship of Evangelical Churches.
The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo is the largest attraction in the region and brings in about half a million people every year. The Fort Wayne Museum of Art has large collections of American art and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The city also has a history center that is located in the Old City Hall with thousands of artifacts recalling the history of the region.
